Fire & Safety

Living well in a fire-prone valley

Our hills are beautiful and they burn. Every valley household should know its evacuation zone, have alerts set up, and keep a go-plan. Start here โ€” it takes ten minutes.

๐Ÿšจ In an active emergency

Call 911 for immediate danger. For evacuation status, check Genasys Protect (the county's official zone system) and AlertSanDiego. Do not wait for a knock on the door โ€” if you feel unsafe, leave early. The valley has limited exit routes.

Defend your home

Defensible space is the valley's best insurance

Homes on the rim back up to wildland. California law requires 100 feet of defensible space, and insurers increasingly inspect for it โ€” several valley households have faced non-renewal in recent years, so documentation matters.

  • Zone 0 (0โ€“5 ft): nothing combustible against the house โ€” no mulch, no junipers, no stacked wood.
  • Zone 1 (5โ€“30 ft): lean, clean, and green; trim trees 10 ft from the roof.
  • Zone 2 (30โ€“100 ft): reduce fuel, mow, and space plantings.
  • Harden the house: ember-resistant vents, clean gutters, Class A roof.

Valley-specific notes

Our area's limited exits (Rockwood Rd โ†’ Cloverdale โ†’ 78, and San Pasqual Valley Rd) mean evacuation traffic concentrates fast โ€” another reason to leave on a warning, not an order. The 2007 Witch Creek Fire burned through this valley; it isn't a hypothetical. If you're new to the neighborhood, ask a longtime neighbor about their evacuation experience โ€” and share yours.
